If you enjoy seeing every screen lock up while adobe configures something…then you will enjoy using Acrobat 7 in Vista. I have no idea what causes this bug, but it seems like acrobat wants to install something and it starts over everytime you use explorer.
That means every web browser screen, even a new tab! It also means opening the computer applet (to see your drives or files) also fires this thing into gear. Eventually it times out or goes away bit it really screws up your productivity. I tried a few variations on the install, setting the installer properties to WinXP Service Pack 2 didn’t seem to matter.
I even checked the adobe site, to see if their was a Vista patch–no such luck. Apparently they are still exploring the new OS from Microsoft and haven’t produced anything to fix this yet. I’m sure this wont last for long but what a nuisance in the present. If you have Acrobat 5 it works better but it doesn’t install the print driver for some strange reason. I guess you can’t have everything…where would you put it?

I have installed Acrobat7 Pro (Vista x64 business), and aside from the fact that the pdf writer can’t be installed, reading works fine here.

Sorry about the last msg – it seems to have gone awry. I was interested in your side comment about Acrobat 5 since it is that that I am hoping to load into a Vista Home Premium system using XP compatibility mode. Can you explain the problem with that please? I don’t understand the bit about the printer driver.
Many thanks

Basically the printer driver (so far in my tests) does not appear as a listed printed in Acrobat. Meaning you can’t print to pdf. For some this may be a non issue-if they are only using the reader. But for those who create in Acrobat-it’s a major setback. I’m tinkering with Microsoft’s XPS format now as a work around.

Oh Yes that is indeed a serious problem. I use Acrobat 5 a lot (under XP) to generate pdf versions of documents from Office and from my scanner – and of course rely on using the print to pdf mode. Is it not possible to make any pdf’s at all from (say) MS Office products? Acrobat 5 also has indexing and searching facilities which I recall were left out of Acrobat 6 (though I do not know the position with the latest versions) so being able to use Acrobat 5 (the writer version, not the reader) under Vista would be excellent. I hope you are successful in finding a workaround and if so that you can post details here!
Thanks for your help.

I found a download at Microsoft.com that can generate PDF or the XPS formats, here is the link for anyone who want’s to try it.

You may be able to install Acrobat 5, 6, 7, and 8, all with the printer, if you turn OFF the User Account Control. Make suyre you turn it ON again after installing Acrobat.

Can you explain how to turn User Account Control off and back on?
I looked at the Microsoft link that drjef provided, you need Office 2007
The quickest way is to go through control panel, user accounts, and on the right of the account names there is a link “Turn User Account Control on or off” click that and you can reverse either way.

bad news friends,
Adobe has no intention to update any versions of Acrobat earlier than v.7 so that they work with Vista. If you were a registered user of v.7, Adobe would have sent a free upgrade to v.8 able to handle vista…but if you weren’t on their lists, you are left in the wind.
you can read up on it at:

I’ve had the same problems with Acrobat 5 in Vista. It exhibits the same problems as described in the article. I’ve finally been able to uninstall, but would like to know a work around or fix.

I too installed it on Vista. Used XPSP2 compat mode too and cannot print Word docs nor IE web pages. It will, however, work with a scanner i.e., scan docs to Adobe PDF. This is even before using compat mode. Also the Adobe Distiller shows up as one of my printers. What gives? Any other workaround other than scanning documents if I want them in PDF?

Is Vista good ?
It doesn’t like my printer or my version of Acrobat [v.5].
Is Vista better because it hogs so much RAM ?
Any tips ?
Specifically – how do I migrate back to Windows XP ?

I found a solution ?
TRY : http://www.go2pdf.com/product.html
Its freeware + slick, but it puts ad on each file you make.
ENJOY !!!!

PrimoPDF is also free, but it does not put ads in your files. It’s available here:
http://www.primopdf.com/
I’ve used it a few times, and it seems to work ok. The reviewers on
download.com mention one quirk related to the interface, but it’s a minor flaw considering it’s a free PDF distiller. However, it doesn’t have the advanced configuration options that come with Acrobat. If you need to do some professional printing with advanced features (e.g., font embedding, overprinting, fat PDFs), you’ll have to bite the bullet and pay for the upgrade.
Good luck.

Vista will work OK with Acrobat 7.
Below, I describe how I set it up. There are 3 other things worth noting.
1. Disable UAC completely in Vista and restart if need be ( I never have UAC on)
2. Download acrobat reader 8.1 fully up to date, for Vista.
I don’t know if this helps, but I had done this and it is not unusual for dll files to be shared, so following may depend upon sharing dlls which are Vista compastible
3. Name the directory something else as adobe love creating directories and it’ll be hard to isolate the 7.0 installtion if you need to remove or step back.
If your original CD version is 7.0.5 or later then read my text and see if you can still use it by switching out explorer during installation.
That done……………
I had a version 7.0 Professional and it requires updates 7.0.1-7.0.3 (minor) downloaded from adobe.com.
There is no 7.0.4
7.0.5 is where the problem lies. This is a major install. Do NOT install through acrobat “update” link, dowload the file from the adobe web site – a google search’ll find it (25MB? from memory)
When you install it gets to a point where it clashes with explorer. Explorer of course is your interface to the desktopand windows so you don’t wanna lose it!!
When the update has started, immediately locate explorer.exe in the application proces slist (via Ctrl+Alt+Delete- Task Manager) and remove it.
Your icons will disappear but don’t worry.
Once 7.0.5 completed, restore desktop by pressing the Windows key and R simultaneously to get “run” and type explorer.exe in the box.
Voila – refresh screen (F5) to check and then you should be able to install 7.0.7, 7.0.8, 7.0.9 (no 7.0.6).
Again, do these by downloading from adobe web site – not through acrobat – u canopen acrobat each time to check it runs and the version number.
That’s it!
I did that and having fully functional Acrobat Professional 7, whichsits alongside acrobat reader 8.1 (and Primo PDF) quite happily.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Barry K, this method worked for me without having Acrobat 8 installed…
1) I had the original CD which contained 7.0, and installed it.
2) I hit up ms.config from the Run box, and disabled the Adobe acrobat background things from running (acrotray etc).
3) Then installed 7.01, 7.02, 7.03.
4) Opened the task manager in advance
5) Installed 7.05, and as soon as it opened, killed the explorer in task manager.
6) I could not get the run box to appear with Windows>R, so I just did Ctrl/Alt/Del and restarted the machine.
7) Then proceeded to install 7.0.7-9, did one more restart, and all is good.
Nice to know I don’t have to shell out another $200 for acrobat 8 professional, when 7 is perfectly good.

I just ran the Adobe Update Manager and it is now installing 7.1.0 Acrobat Professional update. Lets hope this is a real fix for this annoying bug! It is about 59Mb though…
