I came across this fix accidentally but wanted to pass it on in case others had the same frustration. When I was tinkering with performance settings in Vista, I unselected several items for graphics in the interest of speed. One of those was the setting to generate thumbnails inside folders. I’ve been whining about this in previous posts, but thought it was a bug. Turns out it was the user–in this case me! I set the performance to adjust for best appearance and poof the thumbnails are back. I must say this is one of Vista’s best features and I’m glad to see them working again.

i have vista ultimate

Right click on computer, select properties, and then edit the visual performance settings, so that it is set to run in the most visiually appealing mode rather than fastest. You may need to reboot but thumbnails should work after that. if not, you may need more ram or video juice to get them available.

I did the exact same thing! My girlfriend decided she liked my laptop more than I did, so after I tweaked it out for my games, it became an internet computer. A little time passes and I forgot… it’s not like XP where you can just right click and say “View thumbnails”.
Thanks! It was kind of driving me nuts!

Hugely frustrated with “…stopped working.”
Photo Studio 5.5 which came with a new Canon scanner mysteriously “stopped working” the other day.
AVG free anti-virus has “failed to properly initialize.” I installed it after I ditched that awful McAfee stuff that came with the computer. McAfee will worry a soul to death. You just want to get rid of it. Since AVG was rated in the top five by Consumer Reports, I ran to it as fast as I could.
Windows Media Player also “stopped working” after I installed Bearshare…BUT, it began working immediately and perfectly when I installed RealPlayer to replace it.
My new Gateway laptop has slowed down considerably because I insist on using Bearshare, even though it has 2 gigs of memory, the latest Intel chip, and, 2 gigs of flash drive to use

Thanks Mate (Just what the doctor ordered, the PC doctor that is).
I’ve been looking for this link for some time now, I was beginning to think it didn’t exsist, & after looking I realise that there are loads of people thinking the same & looking for the same link. Its perfect now, even the mpeg files show a thumbnail shot
You’re a star
Thanks

Thanks a million…changing the appearance setting in Performance Info. & tools under the control panel worked like a charm, now I can see my thumbnails whooooo hooooo!!!
1:46 pm - September 13th, 2007
You dont have to change to Best Appearance. Just check the box that says View thumbnails instead of icons under custom. I Usually select best performance and custom to get the most speed out of vista

Does anyone know if it is possible to somehow fix the thumbnails in Home Basic Edition? I have been trying to find out about it, but no success so far. If anyone knows, I would appreciate the comment. Thanks

PLEASE someone tell me how to fix this same problem on VISTA HOME PREMIUM! I have no earthly idea of what to do. I followed the same directions listed above for the fix on VISTA ULTIMATE, and it did not work.
Insead of a thumbnail… I’m getting a “PAINTBRUSH PICTURE” program icon.
I have to be able to see these thumbnails for a graphic design job asap!
I just got this computer, and so far, this Vista thing sucks!

Thanks a ton. I could not find it in help and it was killing me. I even work at MS and was just about to file a bug on it..
10:44 pm - April 9th, 2008
I’ve just started with Vista and this was driving me absolutely crazy.
I used a similar method:
control panel -> performance information and tools -> adjust visual effects -> click on adjust for best appearance and -> apply.
It worked immediately.

Well, I figured this out also. I’ve been running XP, with the original devices. i.e. half a gig RAM…. I received Vista ultimate and had to prepare for things like lack of all of vista’s ‘whistles and bells’, due to the RAM size. So with a little searching I found what you found. I went for best performance and everything is cool except that all of my icons are the same… I went back to best appearance and all is good. Yes, I need to do a little more tweaking but Vista is running good with half a RAM…. One more item, folks…
That is, when doing disk cleanup I get so many files do to thumbnails.. Is this going to be an on going theme? ..mb’s due to thumbnails???

Answer to kozok
Try this out, right click anywhere outside a file in a folder (must be a picture or movie folder). Select adjust this map and choose the arrowdown and select pictures and videos, hope it helps.

OMG Thanks for the tip!
I thought that this was a Bug from the program i use.
Tecnically speaking, i think that we all wanted to increase performance in our systems, but the fact is that no matter how much we try, we will have to put some more RAM if we are going to use Windows Vista instead of WindowsXP.
BTW, inf you are using Revit 2009 and have this problem and need to fix it, just do what this guys said above; im sure you will be satisfied and calm later.
Thanks again!
ps: excuse my english, im not from US.

Hi guys, you can try:
Go to the Start Menu – Control Panel – Folder Options – View – Files and Folders – Uncheck ‘Always show icons, never thumbnails’
See you…

Hugo – Thank you! I am trying to collate pics for family and was severely frustrated. You have saved their (late) Xmas presents.

Properties route not working for me
Another option is:
Click Start/Control Panel/Appearance and Personalization/Folder Options
Click View Tab and then uncheck “Always show icons, never thumbnails”
Click Apply.
Worked for me anyway.

I downloaded EI 8 and that seemed to fix it.
8:46 pm - February 9th, 2009
Thanks for the tip… it didn’t work for my computer though.
I bought my Dell Inspiron 1525 in December, 2008. When I first downloaded some pictures from my camera, everything worked fine. At the end of December, I tried to download some new pictures from my camera and they show up as a generic jpeg thumbnail. But the old pictures that I first installed show up just fine. Any thoughts? Thanks!
8:50 pm - February 9th, 2009
I should also note that all the jpeg thumbnail images appear just fine in Windows Photo Gallery.
